Petoskey Stone Fireplace Installation In Traverse City

A fireplace is often the centerpiece of a home and when it's crafted from Petoskey stone, it becomes a true work of art. In Traverse City and throughout Northern Michigan, homeowners are turning to this iconic fossil stone to create one-of-a-kind fireplace surrounds that capture the natural beauty and heritage of the region.

Petoskey stone offers a rustic, yet refined aesthetic with its creamy gray coloring and unmistakable hexagonal patterns. Whether you're building a new home or updating an existing hearth, a Petoskey stone fireplace brings warmth, texture, and timeless appeal to any space. Its natural variation ensures that every installation is completely unique—no two stones are ever alike.

At our Traverse City workshop, we work closely with each client to design and install fireplaces that showcase the organic charm of Petoskey stone. We source only the highest-quality material and carefully place each piece to highlight its fossil patterns and natural beauty. From full-height fireplace walls to custom mantels and hearths, we offer tailored solutions that reflect your vision and fit your space.

What is a Petoskey Stone?

The Petoskey stone is a type of fossilized coral that’s become an icon of Northern Michigan. More than just a rock, each Petoskey stone is a remnant of an ancient coral reef that flourished in Michigan’s warm, shallow seas about 350 million years ago. The distinctive hexagonal patterns you see are the fossilized skeletons of Hexagonaria percarinataa colonial coral unique to this region.

According to legend, the stone was named after an Ottawa chief named Petosegay. Over time, the city of Petoskey and this unique stone took on his name, and the Petoskey stone is now the official state stone of Michigan. Petoskey stones are mainly found along the shores of Lake Michigan, especially near Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Traverse City. Their creamy gray and white patterns make them instantly recognizable and highly prized for decorative uses—including stunning countertops.
